Opening my eyes to COP15

Reporting from the UN COP15, Copenhagen

It is now Day 5 of the UN COP15 climate change summit, however today is my first day at the negotiations having arrived yesterday evening in Denmark. Running on 3 hours of broken sleep, it is amazing to se so many people with NGO badges who are accredited into the Bella Centre, where the main negotiations are taking place.

While keeping an eye out for Heads of States, UN delegates, the press and potential celebrities within the crowd, I am beginning to wonder how much influence the many MANY side events have in swaying the main UN negotiations. To begin with, I have participated in three conferences: The UK Know-How of a Low Carbon Transition Society, Question and Answer session with the Executive Board of the UN Adaptation Fund, and Developing Carbon Markets Post 2012. Although these events enlightened us with expert knowledge within the granted topics, I am struggling to understand how these events will have any persuasion power in securing an agreement once the Kyoto Protocol expires in 2012.

So far for me, COP15 has served as a hub for innovation, expertise and human solidarity in wanting to see change within each of our societies. There is great sympathy in wanting to help less-developing countries, and seeing technologies - that are already in place - to be used at an international scale. It is also positive to see examples of businesses and institutions that are and have been putting ideas into practice for over seven years. This is great chance for countries and industries to learn from each other’s work and an opportunity for industry leaders to make a real change by integrating approaches for future investments.
